The Land Run of 1889 was a defining moment in Oklahoma history opening up the two million acre "Unassigned Lands" for settlement. April 22, 1889 approximately fifty thousand people surrounded the region and at the stroke of noon, horsemen and wagons surged forward to seek their 160 acre homestead claim leading to the creation of the Oklahoma Territory in 1890 and 46th state in 1907.
This 45 piece bronze sculpture $6.2 million monument was created by sculptor Paul Moore, taking over 20 years to complete and spanning an area slightly larger than a football field.
The Land Run Monument is located at the south side of the Bricktown Canal, 200 Centennial Ave Oklahoma City, OK 73102, open 24 hours a day, no admission and open year-round to the public. Taking in this immense and incredible site is best done during the day hours.
